启航西方极乐世界工具 往生船如中元艺术品


(槟城20日讯)人活着时去旅行搭飞机要携带护照才能过关,那么往生者要怎么去西方极乐世界呢?原来“往生纸”就是人死后在地府的护照,而用往生纸折成的大船,就是前往西方极乐世界的唯一交通工具!

海客园善才堂号称是槟岛唯一一家以往生纸折成大船的佛庙,每一年中元节都以近万张往生纸折成大船,为往生者提供“护照”及“交通工具”,象征着载送往生者前往西方极乐世界的寓意。

据了解,这艘长18尺、高15尺的“往生船”以近万张由法师诵经的往生纸折成,由10名善信费时1个月合力制成,同时船头及船尾还有用往生纸折成的莲花,并且设有双层船舱,甚至还设有船锚及船号,再加上满满的“金银财宝”,观赏性十足且制作精细,可谓是中元节文化的艺术品。

净水法师:往生纸折成船 槟只有善才堂使用

据善才堂顾问主持净水法师向《光华日报》表示,在槟岛只有善才堂才用往生纸折成船,并通过法师诵经载着往生者度过苦海。他认为,这是真正符合佛教教义的超度方式。

净水法师表示,所有人在世上或多或少都犯有业障,而业障就是沙子、石头会把往生者拖下苦海,因此佛教才利用往生纸折成船,将往生者送往彼岸。

他说,人活着要去其他地方需带护照坐飞机,人死后也是一样,必须有往生纸充当护照,再坐在由往生纸折成的大船上,伴随着法师诵经,才能前往西方极乐世界。

他指出,由于每一张往生纸都已诵经,因此所折成的大船具有法力,配合上法师的引渡,能承担往生者的业障,顺利载往西方极乐世界。

“有位佛友为往生者办了超度法会后,当晚就梦见往生者坐在这艘大船上,证明了这艘大船载着往生者前往更美好的国度。”

骆春德:费时细腻 制作过程不简单

善才堂青年团团长骆春德表示,善才堂利用往生纸折成大船已有几十年的传统了,似乎已是善才堂的独有风格。

他指出,制作过程可是相当不简单。首先得用竹藤作好架构,然后用纸皮作好船身,然后用浆糊把往生纸一层层贴上去,是相当费时且细腻的工作。

他表示,在法师诵经超度过后,这艘船就会被烧掉,整个超度法会才算真正完成。

Seventh Lunar Month Festival



This is a yearly filial piety celebration organized by the Youth Section of Sian Chye Tong Temple at 395 Hye Keat Estate, Air Itam, Penang, in memory of the departed ancestors. The event commences from 31 July 2011 till this Saturday 20 August 2011. Daily offering of vegetarian foods, fruits, flowers and chanting of prayers will be held throughout the celebration. Name and death date of the deceased will be written on a paper tablet and placed in front of a decorated alter of Amitabha Buddha.

Buddhist celebrates this festival under the name – Ullambana. During the seventh lunar month, the living descendants pay homage to their deceased ancestors. On the fifteenth day, the realms of Heaven and Hell and the realm of living are open and Buddhists would perform rituals to transmute and absolve the suffering of the deceased. During this celebration, living descendants will make offerings (Dana) and prayers are held to accrue the meritorious deeds for the deceased in order that they could attain speedy rebirth.

On the final day – 20 August 2011, monks and nuns will conduct special prayers and all the paper tablets will be placed in the “Say Hong Chun” (Paper Ship) and burnt. The ship (“Say Hong Chun”) symbolizes Amitabha Buddha’s effort to ferry the deceased to Buddha Pure Land for repent and rebirth. According to Youth Section Chairman, Mr. Loh, the paper ship was made with the help of the members and took about 3 weeks to complete. Materials used included bamboo, cardboards and joss paper. An offering (“Phor Thor”) will also be held on a big scale on the final day to appease the Hungry Ghosts.
